California Coast

CAS decided to refresh this wing of the aquarium and install a new tank, new graphics, a button based interactive, and a touch screen game.

The wall mural above shows how much of the California Coast is protected by overlapping marine sanctuaries.

By pressing an animal-shaped button on the left, the corresponding animal's migration route and statistics would light up across the panel.

The below detail panels include color coded datalines of tagged specimens and an explanatory graphic that elaborates upon food upwellings that occur and draw these animals to California's coast.

The thick  dataline represents the general migration of elephant seal populations, the thin datalines are from tagged individuals.

Lastly, we installed a Citizen Science game in which you earn points by finding snails, sea stars and nudibranchs in the tidepool with an email signup to participate in a real tidepool Citizen Science trip.

Built for Speed

Fast fish and fast boats. Built for Speed was an exhibit that opened in coordination with the 2014 America's Cup. We articulated an orca skeleton from our collection, a sailfish, a mako shark, a bluefin tuna and Humboldt squid with detailed articles on aerodynamics in ocean animals. These concepts informed ship building and alongside this, we displayed the Oracle team's training catamaran in our hallway.

Tis the Season

Tis the Season for Science is our annual Winter exhibit. Our reindeer themed exhibit hosts live reindeer, reindeer vision, a snowman dome show, a reindeer wheel animation and a highly visual narrative of the reindeer's migration from Fall to Spring.  The map and infographics demonstrate how reindeer survive the harsh, cold winter and how they have adapted for it.
